This
online exhibit aims to complement the
latest report released by GAIA
(Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives/Global
Anti-Incinerator Alliance) entitled:
“Resources up in Flames:
The Economic Pitfalls of Incineration
versus a Zero Waste Approach in the
Global South” by showcasing
products/crafts made out of discard
materials and alternatives to environmentally
destructive materials created by communities
pursuing waste reduction and Zero Waste

While
GAIA recognizes the importance of recycling
and reuse, we also recognize its limitations.
With the current volume, variety and toxicity
of today’s discard system, recycling
and composting are critical but not enough. |
“Zero Waste requires, but goes beyond,
recycling. Even greater opportunities to
move towards sustainability come from other
aspects of Zero Waste – reducing consumption,
eliminating toxics, redesigning processes
and products to be compatible with natural
systems -- in short, redefining our relationship
to materials use in today’s society.” |
